After the passing of her mother on January 1st, 1924, during the childbirth of her younger sister Vivian, she moved to Iron Mountain, Michigan, where she was raised by her older sisters: Nora and Rachel ; and graduated eighth grade. She then moved to the Town of Wagner with her family.

She married Frank Floyd Suennen on February 25th, 1936.
On December 7th, 1941, the day Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, they moved into her current residence on Broennenberg road.

Gen was a homemaker all of her life, only working as a dishwasher at Red and Ed’s Supper Club for about a year. In her early days, she spent time reading her favorite magazines, True love stories and later Reader’s Digest.
She spent her entire life raising five children of her own and four other children when illness struck her brother-in-law and babysat for many children of the area. She also took care of her mother-in-law, Mary, for seven years.

She enjoyed knitting socks and crocheting many crafts. She enjoyed cooking, making large dinners for all the holidays and making pumpkin pies from scratch. She canned garden vegetables and a few times had over 500 quarts of blackberries.
She loved playing cards and would play for several hours, given the opportunity. She loved playing Pinochle, which she taught all her children how to play and was clever enough to make her children believe they had to get the dishes done, so they could play.
