He was a large man and very powerful, tall, straight and well-formed. He was honest, just, truthful and upright in all his dealings; very kind-heated especially to the poor, no one ever being allowed to go hungry from his door. He resided in Hinesburgh where during his life he held many of the principal town offices. During Buchanan's administration(1857-1861) he was Postmaster and although a Democrat, heartily disapproved of secession. He was a farmer and breeder of fine cattle and horsed and left an estate of four hundred acres.
