Civil War Union Soldier. He enrolled in Company A, 23rd New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on August 25, 1863, and was mustered in as a Private on September 13, 1862. His service with the Union Army was cut short by disability, and he was discharged at Trenton, New Jersey on October 31, 1862.

He was the son of Charles Ridgway Schuyler Sr. (February 10 1800-September 22, 1852) and Rachel G. Fenimore Schuyler (May 8, 1804-December 26, 1882).

His siblings were Benjamin Franklin Schuyler, Thomas Schuyler, and Mary Ann Schuyler Shinn.

Private Edward T. Shinn of Company A, 23rd New Jersey was his brother-in-law.
