PLATTSBURGH - John P. Adams, 58, of Holden Ave., Peru, died Friday. Sept. 8. 1989 at the CVPH Medical Center.

He was born Aug. 8. 1931, in Worcester, Mass., the son of James and Ann (Palmer) Adams.

Mr. Adams, assistant academic dean at Clinton Community College, died following an apparent heart attack that he suffered Friday morning on the Bluff Point campus. In addition to his duties as assistant academic dean, he was director of the highly-visible and successful Inmate Higher Education Program (IHEP) orchestrated by Clinton Community College.

The college campus was shocked by the loss Of Mr. Adams. "John Adams was a very dedicated, extremely dependable leader here on campus" Dr. Jay Fennell, president of Clinton Community College, said on Friday. He was most respected for all the outstanding work he did, and also for the way in which he accomplished it" "John's IHEP efforts were outstanding and very much a heralded success on a statewide basis. His loss is a great loss for our campus", Fennell said.

Mr. Adams first came to Clinton Community College in 1972 as a part-time instructor of evening courses at Plattsburgh Air Force Base. He retired from the United States Air Force in 1972 after a 20-year career that featured a tour in Vietnam, a Bronze Star, and an Air Force Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Clusters for Meritorious Service. His highest rank in the Air Force was chief master sergeant.

He earned a personnel management degree at the University of Massachusetts in 1967, graduating fourth in his class and cum laude. Mr. Adams earned a master's degree in guidance and counseling from Westfield State (Mass.) m 1969. Mr. Adams steadily garnered leadership roles at Clinton Community College after being named the veteran's counselor coordinator on campus in 1973. In 1974. he was promoted to assistant for continuing education and helped build one of the most successful continuing education departments of any of the state's two-year college programs.

Mr. Adams underwent heart surgery in 1976 before coming back in 1978 to a promotion as assistant dean for continuing education at Clinton Community College. Since 1978, he was involved in the development of vital Clinton Community College programs such as driver education, emergency medical technology training, PAFB educational programs, criminal justice programs, the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, and the growing correctional facility educational efforts at three nearby state prisons. He was promoted to his present position as assistant academic dean plus director of the IHEP division in 1985.

Mr. Adams was also active in many community services such as the Peru Lions Club, area road running clubs, Little League baseball, and the Clinton County Mental Health Association. He was a member of the Board of Catholic Charities, the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, and of the STOP DWI board.

He is survived by his wife, the former Irene Ann Cahill of Peru; three sons, John P. Adams Jr. of Merced, Calif., Paul D. Adams of Peru, and Dennis M. Adams of Middletown; one daughter, Patricia M. Darrah of Plattsburgh; two grandchildren, David Lawrence Adams, and Jacquelyn Maureen Darrah; one sister, Ann Marino of Worcester, Mass.; and one brother, James W. Adams of Cape Cod, Mass.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday at the Lester E. Thew Funeral Home in Peru. The Peru Lions Club will assemble at the funeral home at 3 p.m. for a prayer service.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Augustine's Church in Peru, with burial to follow in the parish cemetery.
