W. Wayne Atwood, 71, of Bumpass, formerly of Mechanicsville, passed away at his beloved home on the lake June 8, 2011. He was preceded in death by his son, Anthony Wayne Atwood; mother, Velma Mundy Atwood; and brother, Claud Daniel Atwood. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Donna Day Atwood; daughter, Renee Atwood Swymer; grandsons, Michael Anthony Swymer and Nicholas Ryan Swymer; father; Almer Seden Atwood Sr.; brothers, Almer Seden "Buddy" Atwood Jr. and his wife, Susie, and John Ronald Atwood and his wife, Marsha; sister, Mary Atwood Logan; sister- in-law, Sherry Atwood; also many nieces, nephews and other family members. Mr. Atwood was an Air Force veteran, a member of the Day Lodge #58 of Louisa, Va., and he was formerly a trooper with the Virginia State Police, where he was a past president of the VSP Alumni. He retired from Virginia Power as the director of Nuclear Security and from the Louisa County Sheriff's Dept. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. and will be dearly missed by his grandsons and all who knew and loved him. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, with a Masonic service at 7:30 p.m. at Bliley's - Staples Mill, 8510 Staples Mill Rd., where a funeral service will be held 12 noon Saturday. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment 3 p.m. Saturday in City Park Cemetery in Portsmouth, Va.
