The son of Jacob & Mary Hatz, he married Mary Ann Rudolph October 2, 1859, in Carlisle. In 1860, he was a shoemaker living in South Middleton Township, Cumberland County, and stood 5' 7" tall with sandy hair and black eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 29, 1861, as a private with Co. G, 55th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company September 9, 1864.

NOTE: Originally posted as "W. H. Hartz," he received a federally issued tombstone under the name "Hartz" and that verifies his service with the 55th Pennsylvania. It appears that "Hatz" and "Hartz" are the same man, but his name, other than the tombstone, is always spelled "Hatz" in every other source.
