William McKinley, one of the well known old soldiers of Fort Scott and distantly related to the martyred president of the same name passed away at 4 o'clock this morning at the family home at 1120 South Scott Avenue after weeks of illness with pneumonia. Death did not come unexpected, as it had been known that his condition was very serious, but on Saturday it had been thought that he was somewhat improved. Death came quietly. No arrangements have been
made for the funeral service as it was desired to learn whether or not a daughter, who resides in the south can be present.
William John McKinley was born in the state of Ohio sixty-eight years ago. He enlisted in a regiment from that state at the outbreak of the Civil war, serving for three years. Seventeen years ago the family came here from Garry, Iowa, where they had resided for a number of years.
Mr. McKinley is survived by his wife and five children: Mrs. Leota Long, of Summerall, Miss., Mrs. Anna Shaffstall, of Diboll, Texas; Mrs. Sylvia Whitehead, of St. Louis; Mrs. Stella Rumstead, of Wichita and Will McKinley, Jr., of this city, all of whom have been here for the past several days, called by his severe illness, except Mrs. Long from whom no word has as yet been recieved.
Mr. McKinley was one of the leading members of the G. A. R. here and that organization will have charge of the funeral service when it is held.
