Sister Clare Adelle left Manitowoc for Milwaukee on Tuesday morning, August 16, expecting to be back on Thursday evening. She usually stayed with the Mercy Sisters at Holy Family Convent, Whitefish Bay when the doctor visits necessitated a layover, and this time, it was no exception. On Wednesday night, she was feeling poorly at the supper table and later collapsed in her room. The paramedics were called to resuscitate her, but to no avail. Sister Clare Adelle was taken to St. Michael's Hospital where she was pronounced dead at 8:33 p.m. Sister Ritarose received word of her death shortly after that time.

Born on August 19, 1916, Mary was the daugher of the late Walter and Clara O'Brien Bolzenthal of Sacred Heart Parish, Manitowoc. She entered Holy Family Convent in 1929, shortly after her eighth grade graduation from Sacred Heart School. She wanted a combination of her mother's name and also Adelle for our Sister Adelle who helped foster her vocation. Therefore, at her reception, she asked for Sister Clare Adelle as her religious name.

Sister Clare Adelle was very bright and used her mind well. After obtaining a Bachelor's degree in Latin from Holy Family College, she pursued a Master's in Latin and Greek from Catholic University in Washington, D. C.

Starting out as a primary teacher in 1934 at St. Mary School, Rhinelander, Sister Clare Adelle made her way teaching in our grade schools at Lindsay and West Point, Nebraska. Junior high teaching needed her expertise at St. Philip, Green Bay, St. Boniface, Manitowoc, and again, Guardian Angels in West Point. Realizing her potential and giftedness, her next assignments led her to high school teaching at Petoskey, Ironwood, Waukesha, Holy Family Academy (Manitowoc), and St. Anne's Escanaba. She returned for a two-year stint once more at Holy Family Academy and from there went on to teach at Holy Family College.

Sister Clare Adelle continued her work in the classroom as long as it was possible for her to do so. In December 1968, Sister retired to Holy Family Convent where light work as provided to make her feel needed and useful.

To give up the work of teaching that she loved, was a blow to Sister Clare Adelle. She wanted to keep on going but her health would not allow her to continue. She appeared frail, weak, and tired most of the time as a result of Parkinson's Disease. Nevertheless, she did paging at the Motherhouse and was very good at it. She had a pleasing voice and was an asset to that office. She had to give up that work, however, within the last four years. Sister Clare Adelle volunteered to be a discussion leader and a sister who had been in her group for the last three years enjoyed her very much. "Sister portrayed a gentle spirit, a wealth of knowledge, a good leader with much common sense."

Before Sister Clare Adelle left for Milwaukee, she had sent a note to Sister Dolores Ann saying she would be back on Thursday and would do some washing for her on Friday as usual. Sister Dolores Ann was in the same profession class as Sister Clare Adelle and they had come to know one another better during these last years. She told how Sister Clare Adelle would often come to visit her and that she would also do some shopping for her and for our older sisters while in Milwaukee. She was going to miss Sister very much!

Despite the heavy cross she bore, Sister Clare Adelle always reached out to others. She would often go that "extra mile" to be of service. Last year one of the sisters gwas going on a long trip and had forgotten to pick up something she needed from the Sisters' Shop. She was to leave on the morrow and was desperate. On hearing this, Sister Clare Adelle told her to come to her room and she would give her what she neded. Sister Clare Adelle would oftentimes go to the shop outside of hours to get something that a sister wanted. She did not count the cost to herself when it came to helping others.

Sister Clare Adelle was burdened with enough medical problems which would make most people not only weakened physically but make them want to "hide under a barrel." She was afflicted by so many medical maladies and bravely accepted them because of her devout faith. Sister sustained her problems extremely well and very courageously. She rarely spoke about her ailments. How she managed to keep on living, baffled so many. Whenever she had surgery, she hoped for some relief and, if that were not possible, what God wanted. Whatever the outcome was going to be, she felt she could truly say with Pope John: "I am not afraid to die nor do I refuse to live."

Sister was devoted to her family. She has two sisters still living and many nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly. She was always a avital part of their family celebrations. She had a host of friends: the Sisters at Whitefish Bay, people she met through the years, and even the bus driver whose route she traveled weekly.

Sister Clare Adelle did not return by bus on Thursday evening, August 18. Instead, she took a different route, a route that led to her heavenly homeland. Her funeral Mass on Saturday, August 20, was a testimonial and tribute to her. Many family members and friends came to say their final good-bye. It was a manisfestation of their love for her. May that love continue to live on!
