Benjamin Johnson Sr. passed away at the age of 67 from a long-standing battle of kidney cancer at his home surrounded by family and friends on January 21, 2012. Ben was born November 8th 1944 in Coolidge, AZ. Ben grew up in Coolidge and graduated from Black Water High School. He then enlisted into the Army in June 1965. He completed Airborne school in 1966. He then was stationed in Vietnam from June 1967 to Juneau 1968 with the 1st Air Cavalry Division. Ben was honorably discharged from active duty, June 1968.

Ben met Carol Mayeda at Haskell Indian Native College in Lawrence KS, and then married in Phoenix, AZ on 1969. His first child, Ben Jr. was born September 1970 in Phoenix. Three years later April Mae was born in Phoenix. They moved to Hoonah Alaska in 1973. He immediately fell in love with Alaska and started to work on the Alyeska Pipeline for a few years. Ben and Carol then had three more children, Lucas Clifford born October 2, 1978, Bernadine and Jeremy Johnson born on January 10, 1981. Later that next year Carol passed away on October 20th, 1982. He later re-married to Bertina Johnson on December 31, 1991.

Ben had a long-standing love for the town of Hoonah and worked at the Power Plant as the operator for approximately 25 years. His love for this town had given him such happiness, such as fishing, hunting and gathering wood with friends and family. He will be remembered for his genuine smile and honesty. He leaves behind his wife Tina, children, Ben Jr., April, Lucas, Jeremy, and Bernadine; his step children Duane, Melissa, Suzy, Jamie, and James Jr., his grandchildren, family from his original home sister and brother-in-law Jean and Dennis Montano, step brother Kenneth, Chuck, Robert, nieces Dena, Iggy, Leslie, Robin, Tasha; as well as extended family and friends.
