Husband of Mary Joan Devine, of Orillia, Ontario, Canada.

422 Squadron RCAF operated Flying Boats [principally the Short Sunderland] on reconnaissance missions over the North Atlantic during World War 2, hunting down German Submarines, and giving air support to convoys. It was based at RAF Castle Archdale, Lough Erne, Co. Fermanagh, Northern Ireland.


A Short S.25 Sunderland, NJ 175, crashed at Corlea, Cashelard, Co. Donegal, on 12 August 1944, due to failure of one of the four engines, shortly after take-off. They were attempting to use the "Donegal Corridor" to gain access to the North Atlantic, via Donegal Bay.
It was instructed to jettison fuel and depth charges in Donegal Bay before returning to base.
The location of the crash was just across the Irish Border from Lough Erne.
