M.A. Hudson, Baraca Chief, heart victim
Syracusan stricken while conversing with wife.
Marshall A. Hudson, 76 of 635 Allen Street, founder fo the Baraca and Philathea Union and international known is dead, a victim of heart disease. He died last night at his home.
The fatal attack occurred in the living room of the Hudson home while he was engaged in conversation with is wife. Although afflicted with the disease for several years, Mr. Hudson had been able to be up and about a greater share of the time.
A native of Syracuse, Mr. Hudson received the inspiration which resulted in the organization of the Baraca Philathea Union as he was leading the First Baptist Church one Sunday in the year of 1890.
Several young men were standing outside the church waiting for lady friends who had attended the evening services. Mr. Hudson invited the youths and their girls into the church and proposed forming of the organization. It met with instant favor and quickly spread through out the state, nation and to foreign lands.
Mr. Hudson was elected president of the union, a position he held at the time of his death. The membership of the organization is more than 1,000,000 and had branches throughout the world.
At a Homecoming convention in Syracuse in 1913 delegated from all parts of the globe came here to pay tribute to Mr. Hudson.
The Bacara room in the First Baptist Church is named Hudson Hall in his honor and the chimes in the tower of that church which are heard daily in the downtown section by hundreds of people were donated by Mr. Hudson at the time the new edifice was erected several years ago.
His wife, Mrs. Mary A. Hudson, and a son-in-law, Paul A. Donovan, were with him when he died.
Mr. Hudson is also survived by a son, Marshall Hudson, three daughters, Mrs. Donovan, Syracuse, Mrs. Eva Robinson and Mrs. Harriet Grubert both of Liverpool and 11 grandchildren.
Private prayer services will be held at the family home Thursday afternoon at 1:45 o'clock. Funeral services will be conducted at the First Baptist Church Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock with the Rev. Dr. Bernard C. Clauson, pastor officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
