Born in New York, he was the 4th of 16 children of Frederick and Susannah (Griffeth) Ludington. He and brother Harrison (later Gov) moved to Milwaukee about 1839 joining their uncle Lewis in the mercantile business. About 1848 he engaged in the lumber business with large land holdings and saw mills and corporate office in chicago. He also served as President of the 5th National Bank of Chicago. He and Charlotte married in 1842 and ahd 3 children: George, Mary and Jennie. He died at his home 1687 Michigan Ave, Chicago.
