When he attained manhood he went to work in th mill in sS Jacob, which his family at that time owned, and followed the miller's trade util 1896 when the mill property passed into the hands of the Valier-Spier Milling Co. He then established himself in the house furnishing and undertaking business in St. Jacob and had followed that for nearly thirty years previous to his death.
On 10 Feb 1885 at Blackjack he married Mary Ottwein
One child was born to the union.
