Elmer E. Branning, 80, a resident of Larwill, died at 12:58 a.m. Thursday, February 24, 2000 at Miller's Merry Manor in Columbia City where he had been a resident since January 17.
Born November 1, 1919 in Fort Wayne, a son of Edward H. and Irene Mosshammer Branning, his formative years were spent in Aboite Township, Allen County where his education was completed. In 1937 his family moved to Thorncreek Township, Whitley County.
In November 1942 he enlisted in the United States Army, serving during World War II. He was honorably discharged on May 5, 1945.
On June 24, 1944, he was united in marriage to June M. Gebert and following his discharge from the U.S. Army, they made their home near Larwill. Mrs. Branning died January 7, 1997.
He was a member of the Larwill Due Guard Lodge 278, Order of the Eastern Star 65, of which he was past patron, and Columbia City Bowling League for more than 40 years.
Surviving relatives include two sons, Jack D. Branning, Warsaw and Randy G. Branning, Columbia City; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two brothers, William Branning, Larwill and Paul Branning, Warsaw.
In addition to his parents and wife , he was preceded in death by a brother, Conrad Branning.
The funeral service is 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 26, 2000 at Smith and Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City, with the Rev. Curtiss Johnson officiating. Burial is at Lakeview Cemetery. Larwill. Visitation is 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home, with the Due Guard Lodge 278 conducting a twilight service at 8 p.m.
