The "World War Service Record of Rochester and Monroe County" states:
"Jarvis Harry Abey was born in Rochester, NY… son of Harry T. and Rose Ellen Abey. He was graduated from Public School #7 and attended East High School for a short time. He was a member of Valley Lodge, F. & A.M.. Lalla Rookh Grotto, of Rochester Consistory, A.A.S.R. and of Damascus Temple, A.A.O.N.M.S…."
He served on the USS Iowa, and was stationed at N.T.S. Hampton Roads, VA in early 1918 where he was confined to hospital for nearly a month prior to attending O.T.S. from which he was commissioned as an Ensign, April 9, 1918.
He was first assigned to "Sub Chaser 205" then the USS Vermont.
Ensign Abey was taken ill with influenza aboard Vermont and was transferred at sea to the hospital ship Solace where he died 4 October 1918.
Ensign John W. Remington accompanied Abey's body when it was returned to Rochester for burial as a representative of the crew of Vermont and the men who bore his casket to the gravesite were Rochester-based Naval officers.
