John Boykin was the eldest son of Simon Boykin, Jr. and the former Nancy Andrews.

During the War of 1812, John Boykin served in Maj. Henry Wills' 65th Regiment, Virginia Militia raising to the rank of Major.

On December 5th 1826, John married Carolina Matilda Kello, with whom he had four known children:
Mary Virginia (1840-1884)
Nancy Andrews (1842-1916)
Richard Simon (1846-1914)
William Henry (1856-1860)

John Boykin is buried near his parents and grandparents in the Boykin Family cemetery.
