Benjamin's father was John Gregg of Peterborough (1728-1798, son of John Gregg and Agnes Rankin), and his mother was Elizabeth Gregg (c. 1740-c. 1772, daughter of Lt. Samuel Gregg and Mary Moor(e)). Benjamin's parents were first cousins and descendants of Captain James Gregg and Janet Cargill.
