Trombonist, teacher and conductor. He was the principal trombonist for the National Symphony Orchestra for 29 years and widely considered to be one of the world's finest orchestral trombonists. He co-founded the Washington Symphonic Brass chamber group, of which he was director and conductor. He taught at The Catholic University of America, and was an "artist-in-residence" at the University of Maryland. He also taught privately, and directed classes and seminars nationwide, including master classes at some of the nation's most illustrious musical conservatories. In addition to the trombone, he played the piano and the clarinet. He obtained his bachelor's degree from Oberlin College's Conservatory of Music, going on to receive a master's degree in music from the University of Illinois and a doctorate in music from Boston College. He was predeceased by his first wife, Elizabeth Mruk Stevens, a concert pianist.
