Married Emilie Louise Stahlberg on July 31, 1880, in Berlin, Germany.

William arrived in Baltimore, Maryland, without his family, from Germany on August 27, 1884, at the age of 31, aboard the ship Braunschweig as a brick layer headed for Illinois. He settled in Aurora, Illinois and became a naturalized citizen March 10, 1890.

His wife Emilie and daughter Anna Elizabeth, age 4 and son Wilhelm "Willie" almost 1 year old, arrived on June 5 1885, over nine months later, in New York, New York from Bremon, Germany aboard the ship Weser.

He was a brick mason in Aurora, Illinois and in Opdahl Township, South Dakota.
