Born in Shelbyville, Tennessee, Harry Athel was the oldest son of Charles Thompson and Nannie Lee Burrow Snell.

Athel married Price Moore on September 30, 1906 in Bedford County, Tennessee. Together they had one son, Charles Columbus Snell. After the couple divorced, Athel married Emma Lela Warren in Franklin County, Tennessee on June 29, 1916.

Athel and Emma would become the parents of seven children; 3 sons- Harry Athel Jr, James Leslie, Charles Shepherd, and 4 daughters- Jo Anna, Martha Aldrene, Nellie Virginia and Billy Jean.
