As a young man he was a lumberjack and traveled all over Canada and USA with brother, John Harkins. For a time they were in Portland, Oregon lumbering, Dan working as a teamster.
Married Carrie Dixon on March 30, 1922 at Traverse City Congregational Church parsonage. Dan worked as a farmer after marriage, his barn being one of the first in Grand Traverse County to have electricity. Dan and Carrie moved to Muskegon for a time, where he worked for Continental Aviation and together they also ran a boarding house. They later returned to Traverse City area (north of Buckley).
