On 12 Jul 1861 Lucius mustered into service with the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, being credited to the quota of Grafton, Massachusetts. He was 31 years, 9 months and 29 days old.
He died on 26 Aug 1862 at The Pennsylvania Hospital, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, of disease. He was 32 years, 11 months and 13 days old.
His death certificate from the city of Philadelphia states that he was originally buried in the now defunct Glenwood Cemetery in Philadelphia.
In January 1864, his widow received a pension. On 2 Mar 1864 she remarried to Albert N. Bonn at Grafton, Worcester County, Massachusetts, a first marriage for him and the third for her. She died in 1873 and her father was given the guardianship of Lucius' daughter.
On 24 Sep 1879 Lucius' daughter, Abbie Flora Boyden married George Washington Willie at Grafton, Worcester County, Massachusetts, in a first marriage for both.
(Winslow Boyden, Lucius' brother, served in B 3, Rhode Island Heavy Artillery.; Winslow's widow, Ann M. (Carr) Boyden, received a pension after his death from consumption on 14 Feb 1864, in Holden, MA.)
