"David S. Green, 83 years old, the 'cub pilot' in Mark Twain's 'Life on the Mississippi,' a member of the firm of John W. & D. S. Green, and later associated with J. J. B. Hilliard & Sons, stock brokers, died at 10:30 o'clock yesterday morning at the home of his sister-in-law, Mrs. John W. Green, 1405 South Third Street.

He was born August 25, 1839, on his father's plantation near Henderson, Ky. His father, Rector (sic) Green, owned more than 2,000 slaves and an extensive plantation at the beginning of the War Between the States, but most of this wealth was wiped out at that time.

During the war he was a pilot on the Mississippi River steamer 'Gray Eagle.' He served under Mark Twain as a cub pilot and his personality was drawn by Clemens in his books on the Mississippi River.

He came to Louisville in 1869 and was associated with the firm of Jackson, Loving & McGoodwin, bankers. Later he was with Carter Bros. dry goods merchants, and continued with this firm until he formed a partnership with his brother, the late John W. Green, in the stock brokerage businsess. The latter firm was dissolved in the 1920 (sic) on his brother's death and since that time Mr. Green was associated with the Hilliard company.

Mr. Green was a member of the famous Poker Club, which played the game 'for fun.' He outlived Attilla Cox, Sr., A. O. Brannin, W. H. Wymond, Charles Dougherty, Dr. Clint W. Kelly, Joseph C. Dodd, Dr. Preston B. Scott and Dr. John H. Lewman, members of the club. Two members, John H. Brand of New York and Peyton N. Clarke, Sr., survive.

Surviving Mr. Green are a daughter, Mrs. Clarence D. Simpson, of St. Louis; three half-sisters, Misses Margaret and Winifred Green of Louisville and Miss Nellie Green of Washington; three half-brothers, Olla Green of Ponca City, Okla.; Harvey Green of Blanchard, Okla., and Robert Green of Louisville, and a niece, Miss Marion Green, society editor of The Louisville Times.

Funeral services will be held at 11 o'clock tomorrow morning at the residence. Burial will be in Cave Hill Cemetery."
