Mrs. Phoebe Schertz.

Mrs. Phoebe Schertz, a well known and highly respected pioneer, died her home near Ottumwa, May 16, 1912 at the age of 74 years, 2 months and 9 days. For some time past her health has been failing rapidly. The illness which caused her death was apoplexy.

She was born In Brunnlgweller, Germany, March 6, 1838. At the age eighteen she immigrated to America. January 25, 1857, she was united marriage to Joseph Schertz of Ottumwa. They immediately settled on a farm five miles north of town where she had resided ever since. To this union was born thirteen children, nine whom survive her. They are Philip and Jennie Schertz, who reside at the parental home, Mrs. J. H. Brown of Stuart. Neb., Miss Trissie B. Schertz, Mrs. George Robertson and Mrs. Samuel Dimmitt, all of Ottumwa, Mrs. C. W. Young of Stillwater, Okla., and Misses Caroline and Flora Schertz of Pasadena, Cal. She Is also survived by thirty-two grandchildren and five great grandchildren four brothers and three sisters, besides numerous other relatives and a host of friends

Her husband and four children preceded her in death. She had been member of the German Lutheran church all her life. She was a faithful wife and loving mother and her death was a great shock to all.
