" SCURLOCK-George Scurlock, son of James and Lydia Scurlock, was born in Stokes county, North Carolina, on the 19th day of July, 1800.
He was left in early life, by the death of his father, to the care of his mother. He came with her to Jackson county, Ohio, in the year 1806. He was the youngest son of a family of eight children, only one brother survives him.
He was married to Elizabeth Hanna, in the year 1835, they were both born in the same year, she on 27th day of October, in Greenbriar county, West Va., and of this writing having only one sister living. She had many opportunities in life of testing her benevolent and generous nature. No one ever called and asked shelter, but found the door open and her cup of charity full, and after being refreshed, left happier than they came. Her life was that of an every day Christian.
They commenced life in the early history of this county, living most of the time upon a farm in Bloomfield township. They endured many privations and hardships. She died December 12th, 1869.
They were the parents of eleven children, only six of whom survive to mourn their loss.
George Scurlock was a peaceable, quiet citizen and a good neighbor, and by a life of industry and usefulness won to himself many friends. He was afflicted with partial paralysis about five years ago, from which he suffered greatly, both in mind and body, and from which he never recovered. The Bible was his favorite book, and from its sacred pages he learned that he must be born again. He often spoke of this hope and of the evidence of his acceptance with God. By his afflictions he was reminded of his mortality, and in view of this, while in his right mind, he looked to the close of his life, selected the 15th and 16th verses of the 4th chapter of the Book of Hebrews for the subject of his funeral services. He slept away calmly, and without a struggle, on the 11th day of July, 1881, at 10 o'clock A.M., at the age of 80 years, and 11 months and 23 days.
The funeral services were conducted by Rev. W. D. Cherington, of Jackson, assisted by Rev. J. R. Edwards, of Franklin Valley, at the Union School House, on the 12th day of July, 1881, at 11 o'clock A.M. A large audience of the kind people of the neighborhood and surrounding country attended. "
