Viola L. (Brettmann) Schardt was born 14 Apr 1924 at Republic County KS the daughter of August and Elsie (Bahe) Othling. She departed this life Monday 19 Dec 2011 at Bryan LGH in Lincoln NE at the age of 87 years. She was baptized on 11 May 1924 and confirmed 12 June 1938 both at Peace Lutheran Church in Deshler. Viola began her schooling in Republic County KS where the family lived. In 1935 the family moved to Deshler NE. Viola attended Peace Lutheran School and graduated from Deshler High School in 1941. On 27 Nov 1943 Viola was united in marriage with Edwin Brettmann at Peace Lutheran Church in Deshler and this union was blessed with two sons. Viola and Edwin celebrated 41 years together, 15 years on the farm before moving into Deshler. Viola worked various jobs, Russell Stovers, school lunch program, and Blue Valley Lutheran Nursing Home. She enjoyed crocheting afghans, embroidering tea towels and giving them to her grandchildren. She always enjoyed spending time with her family. She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church and the afternoon women circle, the American Legion Auxiliary, and a bridge club. Edwin passed away 10 Jun 1985 after a lingering illness with cancer. On 2 Feb 1991 Viola married Paul Schardt. Paul passed away 6 Dec 1994 from a stroke.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husbands Edwin and Paul, one sister Lucille Brettmann and husband Arnold, and brother-in-law Lewis Brettmann. She is survived by two sons; Dwayne Brettmann and wife Linda of Seward NE and James Brettmann and wife Barbara of Grand Island NE, one brother LeRoy Othling and wife Earlene of Deshler NE one sister Lela Mae Brettmann of Deshler NE, six grandchildren; Michelle Claycomb and husband Brian of Lincoln NE, Nathan Brettmann and wife Jennifer of Elmwood NE, Lucas Brettmann and wife Amy of Bee NE, Gayle Wichman and husband Nathan of Omaha NE, David Brettmann and wife Tiffany of Omaha NE and Jodi Dubbs and husband Justin of Grand Island NE, great-grandchildren; Claire and Ryan Wichman, Brooke and Morgan Dubbs, Gracie and Madeline Brettmann, Caydin Brettmann, Christian and Rebecca Brettmann, and Cooper Claycomb, nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services will be held Friday 23 Dec 2011 at Peace Lutheran Church in Deshler. Officiant will be Pastor Phillip Nielsen, casket bearers; David Brettmann, Nathan Brettmann, Lucas Brettmann, Nathan Wichman, Justin Dubbs, and Brian Claycomb, organist Julia Pohlmann, burial will be in the Deshler City Cemetery, Deshler Memorial Funeral Home of Deshler, NE is in charge of arrangements.
