Charles Adams, our sweetheart, eternal companion, father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, and friend, passed from this mortal existence at 2:25 pm, on Monday, October 8, 2012.
He was born Grover Charles Adams, Jr. in Jacksonville, Florida, October 21, 1940.
He was the first son and the fourth child of eight of Grover Charles Adams Sr and Nada Mae Cope Adams. Charles was 71.
While studying 3rd Nephi in the Book of Mormon Charles was impressed with the desire of the nine disciples of Christ that wanted to be with Him in Paradise. The Lord, knowing their hearts, told them they would live to the age of 72 and he would take them home to Paradise. Charles' desire became to live to the age of 72. He died of a rare neurological disease called Progressive Supranuclear Palsy and did not make his goal. While discussing this today it was pointed out by family that life begins at conception, and his mother did carry him here on Earth for nine months, so certainly the thirteen calendar days lacking were more than made up by this period, therefore making him 72 with many months to spare. He passed from this life in his own bed in his home in Monroe surrounded by loving family.
Charles' early years were in Jacksonville except for a year in Detroit and a brief stint in Milwaukee in his teens. He left school early to go to work with his father in the sheet metal business.
In 1959 his family moved to California where he was shortly thereafter married to Barbara Gutierrez. This marriage produced his first five children, Bonnie, Brenda, Belinda, G. Charles Adams, III, and Kirt. They were later divorced and Charles met Bethany Herman, a young mother with three small children Daniel, Shawna, and Kelly. They were married in West Covina, California, and had two more children, Charles T. and David, raising the count of children to ten.
Charles worked hard always and was always busy. He could make anything. He owned Olmec Metals, a successful sheet metal shop that specialized in stainless steel kitchen equipment. He also built the Scandia Amusement Park in Ontario, Calif., including their roller coaster.
He was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held many callings, primarily in Scouts, but also was a Primary teacher, a home teacher, and a High Priest. He loved the Savior. In 1988 he took his family to the Los Angeles Temple where he was again married to his darlin' and sealed to his family for time and all eternity.
Shortly after the birth of their youngest son Charles and Beth knew they had more children and adopted five more children in the next few years. They were Joseph Charles, Jared Seth, Ellen Alexis, Mark Albert, and Crissie Alma Adams. This brought their total to 15. This number was of great amusement to his family members as they recall him boldly proclaiming as a teenager that he was "never going to bring any children into ths rotten world".
Despite the proclamation he was an exemplary father who was patient, openly showed his love of his children, was very proud of each one, and tried his best to teach them everything he believed to be important. His family was his life and it made him very happy. He loved to laugh and especially sing. He was well known for bursting into song around his family and making up silly little songs we all still love.
After his retirement his wife opened ABC Doodlebug Daycare on Main St. in Monroe. He agreed to "help out" for a couple of weeks to help her get started and was there every day for the last seven plus years, rocking and playing. He became an instant success as Papa Charles and many children will hold him close in memory their entire lives
Charles is survived by his wife Beth and fourteen of their children: Bonnie (Joe) Carrasco, Orem; Brenda Adams of Victorville, CA; Belinda (Phil) Gadsby, Hesperia, CA; G. Charles (Dawn) Adams, Upland, CA; Kirt (Mary) Adams, Monroe; Daniel (Dee) Adams, Plano, TX; Shawna (Richard) Halstead, Enoch; Kelly Mecham, Pleasant Grove; Charles T. Adams, Gunnison; David (Amy) Adams, Austin; Jared Adams, Richfield; Ellen (Stevie) Buege, Elko, NV; Mark Adams, Monroe; Crissie Adams, St. George. Joseph Charles Adams died in April of 2002, of complications of open heart surgery. At last count there were (approximately) 47 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by sisters Gwen Forsyth, West Valley; Glenda (Charles) Davis, Savannah; and brother, Gene Adams, Pinon Hills, CA.
He is also preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Gregg Adams, and Gordon Adams; sisters: Gail Anne Snearly and Garrie Lohmeyer.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 12, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. in the Monroe 2nd Ward LDS Chapel. Friends may call at the ward chapel in Monroe Friday from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m.
Burial will be in the Monroe City Cemetery.
