Thomas Higgins Chilton Times August 10, 1878

Died – at his residence in the town of Brothertown, Aug. 2d, 1878, Thomas Higgins, Jr., aged 47 years.

The deceased was born in the Parish of Finlough, Co. Roscommon, Province of Connaught, Ireland. In company with his father's family he emigrated to the United States and located at Providence, Rhode Island in the year 1844. Hard times and love for the life of independence in the farm west induced him and other relatives to remove to Wisconsin sometime in the year of 1849. Stony Brook in this county was selected as his home, and as a dutiful son, an affectionate husband, a kind father, a true friend and a genuine neighbor he has had but few superiors in our midst. Hospitable to a fault and a friend to everyone, the tender regard in which he was held at large was evinced by at attendance of about 100 teams which formed the procession that followed the earthly remains to their earthly depository. The tears of sorrow drop from out eyelids as out pencil makes this record and painful thoughts pervade our mind when we think of the bereft widow and eight little orphans, to say nothing about the other relatives and the general mourning. The disease was of a pulmonary nature, and its insidious nature has extinguished many fond hopes that we cherish relative to the human family.

We cannot drop this solemn subject without mentioning that the deceased was a true member of the Mother Church and a devout devotee of that organization, and his belief was so sincere that he often repeated prior to his departure the following beautiful quotation:
I believe in human kindness
Large amid the sons of men.
Nobler far in willing blindness
Than in censure's keenest ken;
In the gentleness that slowly
Sanctions what would others grieve,
In the trust that, deep and holy,
Hopeth all things—I believe.
