The funeral for retired Grangeville teacher and businesswoman Zona Cheds ey is scheduled at 11 a.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church here. The Rev. Steve Rice will officiate and burial will follow at the Prairie View Cemetery.

She died of cancer at her home Tuesday morning. She was 71.

She was an active community member and among her last volunteer projects was serving as chairwoman of the Idaho County Centennial Committee. With Carolyn Frei, she recently edited the book, ''Idaho County Voices,'' a collection of history and photographs.

She was born June 29, 1920, at Villisca, Iowa, to Orran Kirk and Lalla Rookh Seevers Albright. She moved with her family to Lake City, Iowa, and then to Weldon Valley in eastern Colorado, where she received her elementary education.

She graduated from Weldon Valley High School in 1937 and then attended Colorado State College (now Northern College of Education) at Greeley. She graduated with a major in foreign languages in 1942 and went to her first teaching job at Walden, Colo.

She and Edward Chedsey were married Aug. 26, 1942, at Chadron, Neb.

The Chedseys moved to Craig, Colo., in 1942 and the same year to Leadville, Colo. In 1944, they moved to Kevin, Mont. In 1949, the family moved to Grangeville, where she and Edward owned and operated the Idaho Motel for 34 years. They sold the business in 1982.

After working full time at the motel for 10 years, she returned to teaching at Grangeville High School. She taught French, Spanish and English there for 24 years, officially retiring in 1982, but continuing to teach for two more years.

During her years teaching high school, she built up the foreign language program, organized the Foreign Language Club and brought the Amity Aide program to the school. She was a member of the Idaho Foreign Language Association and served in several offices, including as state administrator of the National French Testing Program.

In 1987, she was named Idaho Foreign Language Teacher of the Year.

Her community involvement included membership in the United Methodist Church, where she served in the educational department. She was a member of the Bicentennial Horizon Committee, the American Cancer Society, The Dollar A Month Club, a local writers group and was a past member of International Toastmistress Club.

Her volunteer projects included reading at the Grangeville Convalescent Center.

She recently was honored to have a portion of the Idaho County Centennial Garden named after her.

Her hobbies included attending auctions, collecting old books and sheet music, folklore and art prints. She also enjoyed writing poems, listening to music, reading and attending community events.

Survivors in addition to her husband at their home at Grangeville include three daughters, Virginia James of Lewiston, Jane Pratt of Stites and Helen Henry of Grangeville; four sisters, Audrey Blankenship in Arkansas, Ruth Powell of Fort Morgan, Colo., Rowena Saunier of Littleton, Colo., and her twin sister, Zora Larsen of Fort Collins, Colo.; and six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Three brothers died previously.

The family suggests any memorials be contributions to the United Methodist Church.
