Groh, Leo P. (Aug. 15, 1897-Nov. 4, 1945 –husband of Marie Sullivan [married June 12, 1922 at St. Isidore Catholic Church in Osman, Town of Meeme] –son of William C. Groh and Barbara Koenig –born Town of Meeme –moved to St. Nazianz with his parents in 1901 –stock clerk –from Oct. 6, 1926 to April 7, 1932 owned the house at 105 South Fourth Avenue in St. Nazianz –“He operated the Pantry lunch in St. Nazianz for many years, but for the last four years he had been employed at the Ship Building company in Manitowoc –veteran of the World War I” –died from “cerebral hemorrhage, skull fracture – from auto accident” –“Leo P. Groh, 48, St. Nazianz, an employee of the Manitowoc Ship Building company, was killed instantly at 9 pm, and his companion, Theodore Bushman, 34, St. Nazianz, was seriously injured when the car driven by Bushman skidded on the icy pavement of County Trunk A, two miles south of St. Nazianz, and rolled over in a field. The northbound car was returning from Sheboygan after leaving Groh’s daughter, Katherine, at Sheboygan where she is employed as a nurse. The car got out of control on the icy pavement, skidded to the left side of the road, plunged down a 15-foot embankment, and plowed about 150 feet through a field, rolling over. Bushman had his chest crushed and sustained a possible skull fracture. Shipyard Worker Is Killed As Car Skids On Icy Pavement
Leo P. Groh Dead; Companion InjuredLeo P. Groh, 48, St. Nazianz, an employee of the Manitowoc Ship Building company, was killed instantly at 9 pm, and his companion, Theodore Bushman, 34, St. Nazianz, was seriously injured when the car driven by Bushman skidded on the icy pavement of County Trunk A, two miles south of St. Nazianz, and rolled over in a field.
The northbound car was returning from Sheboygan after leaving Groh's daughter, (private), at Sheboygan where she is employed as a nurse.
The car got out of control on the icy pavement, skidded to the left side of the road, plunged down a 15 foot imbankment, and plowed about 150 feet through a field, rolling over.
Bushman had his chest crushed and sustained a possible skull fracture. He was extricated from the wreckage and rushed to the Holy Family Hospital. Groh was thrown through the wooden framed roof of the car, cutting his throat and fracturing his skull.
Leaves Two Children
Groh's body was found about 30 feet behind the car, in the field. The car was wrecked in the accident. When officers arrived, the car was resting on its right side.
Mr. Groh is a widower and has two children. He is survived by his his daughter (private) and his son (private), two sisters, Mrs. Rose Schmidtbauer, Sheboygan; and Mrs. Helen Belinske, Manitowoc; three brothers, Edward and William Groh of route 1, Valders and Roland, St. Nazianz; his mother, Mrs. William Groh, Sr., St. Nazianz.
He was born in the town of Meeme in 1897, but after a few years the family moved to St. Nazianz. He attended St. Nazianz schools. In 1922 he married Marie Sullivan of Osman, and she died 10 years ago. He operated the Pantry lunch in St. Nazianz for many years, but for the past four (continued on p.4)
years has been employed at the Shipbuilding company here.
Military Rites
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Gregory's Catholic church in St. Nazianz, and burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will lie in state at the home of his mother in St. Nazianz, from Tuesday morning until the time of services Wednesday.
He was a member of the Holy Name society of the church, and the group will recite the rosary at the family home at 8 p.m. Tuesday. He was also a member of the St. Gregory Catholic order of Foresters, and the group will recite the rosary at 9 p.m. Tuesday.
Military rites will be accorded Mr. Groh by the Thompson-Burkhardt post of the American Legion of Valders, of which he was a member. The Legion auxiliary will also participate. He was a World War I veteran.
