Emory B. Clary enlisted at the age of 18, in 1864, and served as a Sargeant in the Civil War, Union Army, West Virginia Sixth Infantry, Company A. He applied for a pension based on his service 28 September 1876, and was declared an invalid. Pension application no. 226017, certificate no. 551074.

ADVOCATE HERALD, Indianola Iowa, 1 March 1900, p. 3, columns 4 and 5, Norwalk, "Mr. Emery Clary, formerly of this place, died at his home in Atlanta, Ga., Wednesday. The body was brought here on the 4 o'clock train Friday. The funeral was conducted at the M. E. church by Rev. Craft. He was then laid to rest with other relatives in the Norwalk cemetery. His wife and daughter accompanied the remains, returning to their southern home Saturday evening."

INDIANOLA HERALD, Indianola Iowa, 1 March 1900, p. 3, columns 2 and 3, Norwalk, Another of our flag defenders gone; Emory B. Clary was born in Frederick county, Md., Nov. 22, 1843, and moved to Monongahela county, Va., with his parents in 1851; joined the army in 1861 and served 3 years, 9 months and 15 days. He then came to Iowa with his parents in 1867 and located near Norwalk. In 1872 he married Philena Hartley of Norwalk, and to them one son was born, Edd V. Clary, who now resides at Dallas Center, Iowa. Mr. Clary joined the M. E. church at Norwalk in 1876. In 1893 his wife died leaving him and his only child alone and in 1894 he married Mary Floyd of Jacksonville, Fla., He died in Atlanta, Ga., on the morning of Feb. 19, 1900, at the age of 56 years, 2 months and 27 days, and leaves three brothers and two sisters, his wife, Mary, and son Edd, to mourn the loss. Funeral services were held in the M. E. church Saturday, Feb. 24, 1900, and were conducted by Rev. Crafts, who after delivering a fine sermon paid a glowing tribute to the valor and patriotism of the soldiers of the civil war. The floral designs were beautiful, one emblematic of the "Gates Ajar," and we imagined the old soldier when he came to the gate would not hear the watchman crying the hour of night but sacred high eternal noon and all is well in the beautiful city. V. M. Clary of Norwalk, E. S. Clary of Red Oak, M. D. Clary of Lincoln, Neb., Genoa S. Beery, brothers and sister of the deceased and Miss Carrie N. Clovis, a niece, were present.
