Killed in Battle of North Africa

(Hutchinson Leader; May 7, 1943)
Sergeant Roy Krasean was the youngest child of Mrs. Wilhelmina Krasean and the late Gottlieb Krasean of Hutchinson. He was only four months old when his father died on April 7, 1921, almost 22 years to the day when the son was killed in action in Africa...He graduated from the local high school with the Class of 1938. He was with the first contingent from Hutchinson to sail for Ireland in January, 1942, having been a member of Company B for some time. He was a corporal when the company left for Camp Claiborne, LA, and was advanced to the rank of sergeant later.

He was eligible to return to America for officers' training school and expected to come soon after his brother Garfield sailed, but was sent on the African mission before plans for his return were completed. A letter written 5 days before his death was received here last week.

He leaves his mother, one sister, Mrs Clement vacek (Pauline) of jackson, and three brothers, August Krasean of Charles City, IA, George of S St Paul, and Lt Garfield who is stationed at Tacoma, WA.

Roy was a member of Hutchinson's Co B of the National Guard when he left in February 1941.

Roy Krasean and Sylvester Rethlake Members of Local Guard Company.

Two members of Hutchinson's Co. B of the National Guard when they left here in February of 1941 were killed in action on April 8th in the battle of North Africa. This sad word reached members of their families this week.

They are Sgt. Roy Krasean, son of Mrs. Minnie Krasean; and Sgt. Sylvester Rethlake, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dave Rethlake.

These two additions bring to three the number of casualties among the members of the original Company, the death of Nelson Trent having been reported two weeks ago. A number of other members have been reported wounded.

No word is available as to the action in which these men lost their lives, but according to letters from comrades, it is evident that Sgt. Krasean was killed instantly.

The young men were both veteran members of the local Company, leaving here with the group in February of 1941, and taking their training at Camp Claiborne.

They were among the first to go across and trained for some time in Ireland before going to North Africa.

It seems apparent from the various reports which filter through that the local group, many of whom are still in one company, although in a different regiment than they were mustered in, are at the front lines.
