Harold J. McDonald, age 81, of Portage Lakes, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 8, 2012.

Born in Cleveland, Harold spent his entire life in Akron. He graduated from Akron West High School in 1949 and attended Kent State University. Harold was the president of the McDonald Agency, Inc., a real estate and insurance firm founded by his father in 1928. He was also president of Mid-West Mortgage Corp., Treasurer of P&M, Inc. & Housecraft Builder, Inc., a member of the Professional Insurance Agents, the International Organization of Real Estate Appraisers, and a past President of the Akron and Ohio Real Estate Trade and Exchange Association. Harold also served as a regular and a special deputy sheriff with the Summit County Sheriff's Department from 1952 through 1988.

Harold was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, having served on church council, the finance and endowment committees and as an usher. His fraternal memberships include Akron Lodge #83 F.A.&M., the Valley of Akron Scottish Rite, of which he was the 1980 recipient of the Meritorious Service Award. He was currently a member of the Valley of Canton Scottish Rite and a member of Tadmor Shrine.

Harold was preceded in death by his wife, Arlene, his mother, Olive and father, Harold C. McDonald. He is survived by his loving companion of 28 years, Betty Bukovi and her children, two sons, H. Jeffrey (Roxanne) McDonald and grandson Jonathan of McDonough, Ga., Chris L. (Pam) McDonald, two grandsons Chris L. II and James J. of Pasadena, Texas. Harold is also survived by sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Mary Ann and Joseph Scalia, and nieces and nephews, cousins, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Wolf and Mr. and Mrs. Michael Forman.

Visitation will be held on Friday, October 12, 2012 from 2 to 8 p.m., with a Masonic service at 7:30 p.m. at the Hummel Funeral Home, 500 E. Exchange St., Akron, and ALSO on Saturday, October 13, 2012 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Messiah Lutheran Church, 4700 S. Main St., Akron 44319, where funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Interment at Rose Hill Burial Park to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Messiah Church Endowment Fund or to the Shriners' Hospitals for burned and crippled children.
