"History of Essex County, Massachusetts", by Duane Hamilton Hurd, Ed., Published in 1888, pages 757-761.

His father Andrew, born Feb. 29, 1772, married Mary Rantoul, sister of Hon. Robert Rantoul, Sr., of Beverly, at Salem, May 30, 1808, lived in Beverly, where he kept the grammar school and was a teacher of repute, and died Dec. 19, 1813. Andrew Preston was born in Beverly March 19, 1811.

On September 12, 1836, Mr. Peabody was married to Catherine Whipple, daughter of Edmund Roberts, of Portsmouth, who, as Envoy of the United States Government, negotiated the first treaty between this country and Siam and Cochin China, the journal of whose travels in remote Eastern lands, at that time almost un visited, was published after his death, which took place in 1837, while abroad on public business. Of the eight children of this marriage, two sons and two daughters died in early childhood, and four daughters are living. Mrs. Peabody died in Nov. 1869.

In 1852 he received from Harvard College the degree of Doctor of Divinity. In 1852 he became proprietor and editor of the Christian Examiner and the North American Review, till 1863. On September 1, 1860, he assumed professorship of the "heart and of Christian morals" in Harvard College. Dr. Peabody remained at his post for twenty-one years. He acted as Harvard's interum president in 1863 and 1868.

Andrew Preston Peabody was born 19 March 1811 in Beverly, Massachusetts. He entered Harvard University at the age of 12 and graduated when he was 15 in 1826.
