Marion L. "Mel" Ferris , 98, of Arkansas City, passed away Sunday (October 14, 2012) at the Presbyterian Manor Health Care Unit of Arkansas City. Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Wednesday (October 17, 2012) at the Central Christian Church. Burial will follow in the Parker Cemetery. The Reverend Dennis Voth will officiate.
The family will greet friends 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Mel was born September 28, 1914, in Burlingame, Kansas, to Frank and Bernice (Dodge)Ferris. He was reared and educated in Osage City, and Hutchinson, graduating from Hutchinson High School in 1934. He later graduated from Hutchinson Community College in 1936. Mel married G. Rose (Woodward) in 1938, in Hutchinson. The couple had one son, James, and were later divorced. Mel made his way to California with working stops in Texas and Los Alamos, New Mexico, where he worked as a chemical operator for the Manhattan Project during WWII. Mel also served in the United States Army during WWII. In California, Mel worked as department manager of a grocery store in the Los Angeles area. In the late 1940's Mel joined his parents in Arkansas City and met and married Ardelia Reser. The couple was married on July 7, 1950, and lived all but two years of their married lives in Arkansas City. Mel worked for Boeing, the Nu-Lite Plastic Sign Company, Security Oil Company, owned and operated Ferris Oil and Automotive Supply Company, Lewis Floral Company, and the Cessna Aircraft Company at Strother Field. He retired in 1981. Mel was an avid musician. He sang with his brothers and sister when young, played the ukulele and guitar all of his life and was a long time choir member of Central Christian Church.
Mel was a member of Central Christian Church, where he served as Deacon and Sunday School Superintendent. He was also a longtime member of the Ark City Kiwanis Club.
Survivors include six children, James and his wife Kathy of Ames, Iowa, Cathy Creighton, Rebecca and her husband Rick Lane, Floyd and his wife Rosena Ferris all of Derby, Jean and her husband Dick Phillips, Robert and his wife Kathleen Ferris all of Arkansas City; a nephew Bruce Shrouf, brother-in-law Richard "Fritz" Hansen all of Wichita; 14 grandchildren, 7 step-grandchildren, 11 Great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Ardelia; an infant son, Daniel; siblings, Lorena Richards and Milton and Russell Ferris; sister-in-law Melba Catherine "Mimi" (Reser)Hansen.
A memorial has been established with the Central Christian Church of Arkansas City. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
