Mary was nine months old when she died. One gets the impression that Mary's parents are devastated by her death and by that of her siblings later on. Very soon after the death of Mary Adriana, the Gross family left Illinois and moved to Wise County, Texas, onto the ranch of her mother Margaret's father, hoping the location would be healthier. After the death of two children there, the family left Wise County as well. The mother Margaret soon took sick with pneumonia and died in Sherman, Texas, while the father convalesced for years in veteran homes, never to return. The remaining two daughters, Mary's sisters, were cared for by their maternal grandmother in Kansas until they could get by on their own.
