Enlisted and mustered in as Captain on July 24, 1862, into Company B, 9th Regiment, New Hampshire Infantry (Union). Appointed Captain August 10, 1862. Battles, Skirmishes, and Engagements: Battle of South Mountain; Battle of Antietam; Battle of Fredericksburg; Siege of Vicksburg. After the surrender of Vicksburg, William T Sherman led an expedition to clear Joseph E Johnston's troops from the area. Capt. Alexander was severely wounded on July 13, 1863, near Jackson, Mississippi while on the Jackson Expedition. Died of Wounds on July 28, 1863, at Snyder's Bluff, Mississippi.
