Luther attended the College of Business Administration (CBA) at Boston University, entering as a freshman in 1916. As a sophomore in 1917-18 Luther was a member of the inaugural men's ice hockey team. He played point (one of the two defensive positions at that time) for the team's lone game that season, a 3-1 loss to Boston College at Boston Arena. He was also a private in the Boston University Naval Unit.
