Enlisted on 4/17/1861 at Gordonsville, VA., he was mustered into "C" Co. VA 13th Infantry as a Private.
Wounded in leg 6/27/1862 at Gaines' Mill, VA.
Promoted to Sergt. on 4/1/1864.
Wounded in head 10/19/1864 at Cedar Creek, VA.

The 13th Infantry Regiment completed its organization during the summer of 1861 with men from Winchester and Culpeper, Orange, Louisa, and Hampshire counties.

Postwar he again lived in Orange County.
