Enlisted at Fredericksburg, VA., on 3/13/1862, he was mustered into Captain John F. Alexander's Company, Virginia Artillery as a Private. This compant subsequently became Company M, 55th Virginia Infantry.
Severely wounded (by gunshot, 6 inches above knee) on 8/26/1862 in 2nd Battle of Manassas; unable to return to regiment; POW 9/29/1862 Warrenton, VA.; Paroled 9/30/1862.
Absent, (convalescent for 2 yrs.) on all subsequent Rolls until 6/30 - 12/31/1864 Roll when listed as Absent, Detailed 10/1864, light duty w/Comm Dept.
Absent, detailed 12/31/1864.

On 5/26/1884, he applied for a Disability Pension due to his crippling wound.

The 55th Infantry Regiment was organized in September, 1861, by the addition of four companies to W.N. Ward's "Essex and Middlesex" Battalion of Virginia Volunteers. In February, 1865, the 47th and 55th Regiments were consolidated.
