Caroline Elizabeth Hovden, 86, of Ridgeway, died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2000, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

Funeral services were held Monday, Feb. 14, at 10 a.m., at the Madison Lutheran Church, rural Ridgeway, with the Revs. Phillip Olson and Ginny Olson officiating.

Martha Olson was the organist. The Rev. Phillip Olson sang "When Peace Like a River." The congregation sang "Rock of Ages," "Beautiful Savior" and "Amazing Grace."

Casket bearers were Andrew Hovden, Bradley Hovden, Ivan Hovden, Steven Hovden, Terry Hovden and Randy Olson.

Burial was at the Madison Lutheran Church Cemetery, rural Ridgeway. The Fjelstul Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Caroline (Yarwood) Hovden was born Aug. 22, 1913, in Madison Township, at the home of her parents, Charles and Mary (Schrubbe) Yarwood.

She was baptized in October of 1913 and confirmed as an adult Aug. 10, 1941, at the Madison Lutheran Church. She attended the Knutson School and was a graduate of Ridgeway High School.

Caroline was united in marriage to Gerald E. Hovden Jan. 10, 1934, at the Methodist parsonage in Ridgeway. To this union three sons were born, Maynard, Wayne and Dennis.

During their marriage, Caroline farmed with Gerald and cared for a number of invalid family members in her home. She was a member of the Madison Lutheran Church and active in the Madison W/ELCA.

Caroline will be remembered as a person of fidelity and strength. She cared deeply for her family and continued to have an active life until she was stricken Sunday, Feb. 6, at the Madison Church, just before worship.

Survivors include three sons, 11 grandchildren and 14 greatgrandchildren:

The family of Wayne and Patricia Hovden of Ridgeway -- Gwen (Rex) Downing, Dena and Mitchell of Green Bay, Wis.; Steven Hovden of Rochester, Minn., and Amanda LeJune of La Crosse, Wis.; Lesa Lee and Nathan of Ridgeway; and Ivan Hovden of Ridgeway.

The family of Dennis (Christine) Hovden of Ridgeway -- Bradley Hovden of Cresco and Andrew Hovden of Cedar Falls.

Other survivors include one sister-in-law, Mabel Hovden of Cresco, and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Caroline Hovden was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gerald, who died April 27, 1987; three brothers, Leonard, Herbert and Edward Yarwood; one sister, Jessie Herman; two half-brothers, Lloyd and Harold Yarwood; and two half-sisters, Bessie (in infancy) and Grace.
