When Solomon was about 15, he went with his cousin Wilder Joy to settle in Delaware County, Ohio. He became treasurer for the new Methodist church and was also elected a city councilman.
He moved to Peoria, Iowa, where his sons C.C. Joy and Solomon Joy Jr. and his daughters Elmyra Gardner and Eliza Angeline Smith lived. He and his wife lived there the rest of their lives.

After the death of his first wife, Elizabeth Sweetser, Solomon married Eliza Crabb 23 Aug 1866 in Mahaska Co IA (FamilySearch). After Solomon's death, a lawsuit was brought in neighboring Marion County IA (?) over land he owned there. One party was his widow Eliza, who had remarried to Henry Lovell. The Marion Co probate file of Solomon Joy is on Ancestry and states he died intestate on 28 Feb 1872 in Marion Co and lists all of his descendants.
