ESU student from St. Paul dies

A 19-year-old St. Paul man died Tuesday night from injuries sustained in a fight outside of an Emporia bar last week.

Brian Wagner, a freshman reserve linebacker for the Emporia State University football team, died at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, where he was taken by air ambulance with head injuries. He was knocked unconscious in the public parking area outside of Bruff's, a bar frequented by college students, during an early morning brawl April 21.

Emporia police Lt. Mike Heffron said the brawl, which included as many as 10 people, apparently began when two girls started pushing each other. Wagner and two friends knew one of the girls and got involved.

Heffron said four or five other men, who knew the other girl, also got involved.
Wagner was at one point on the ground with someone on top of him, beating him in the face, according to police.

Wagner, who graduated from St. Paul High School last year, played running back, tight end and middle linebacker for the Indians. He was named to the first team of the all-Mineral Belt League football team for at least one position during his sophomore, junior and senior years, St. Paul High School student counselor Paulette Brunskill said.

Wagner also made the first team all-MBL team in basketball, which he played for four years at St. Paul. He also ran track for four years and was involved in Future Farmers of America, forensics and the Catholic Youth Organization. Wagner was a good student who made the honor roll several times, Brunskill said.

Brunskill said a lot of people in St. Paul and the surrounding area were saddened by Wagner's death.

Wagner's mother teaches third grade in St. Paul, and his dad is a Thayer High School teacher.

Cora Hedstrom, director of university relations at ESU, said she is waiting for ESU President Kay Schallenkamp to confirm plans to honor Wagner. She said there has been an outpouring from ESU students who want to do something in his memory.

Schallenkamp released this statement today: "The university wishes to express its condolences and heartfelt compassion to Brian's parents, Jim and Twila Wagner, his sister Brenda and his brother Jason, who have in the last week become particularly close to Emporia State University. We cannot imagine what they must be going through, but we stand willing to support them. The spirit and strength Brian conveyed throughout this past week is indicative of his character, and our student body will be diminished by his absence."

Hedstrom said Wagner was with other ESU students at the time of the fight, but police have not yet confirmed whether those who were fighting against Wagner were students.

Emporia Detective Ron Davis said no charges have been filed against suspects involved in the fight, but charges now could range from simple battery to homicide depending on a decision by the Lyon County attorney. He did not know when charges would be filed. He said there are at least three suspects in the fight.

Hedstrom said funeral arrangements for Wagner are pending, but the funeral will probably be next week.

The university will keep open a hot line that had posted Wagner's condition to make announcements concerning any memorials ESU may have. The number is (316) 343-4797.
