G. D. Sledge, Former Bank President, Dies

Garland D. Sledge, 66, former president of the American National Bank and Potter-Matlock Trust Company, died at 7:50 a.m. today at City hospital where he had been under treatment for the past several days.

Mr. Sledge, who had been in poor health over a long period of time, was removed to the hospital when his condition became critical and members of the family were called to his bedside.

The body has been moved to the Satterfield, Eakin and Dawson funeral home to remain until funeral services are conducted there at 2 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Fairview cemetery. The services will be conducted by the Rev. Dr. Baxter W. Napier of Louisville, who formerly served as pastor of State Street Methodist church here.

Active pallbearers will be G.A. Willoughby, George H. Moseley, William L. Roemer, Fred Spires, Rodes K. Myers and Jones E. Mercer.

Honorary pallbearers will be C. Willard Taylor, G.D. Milliken Sr., Dr. John H. Blackburn, Marshall Funk, Joseph Davenport, Dr. J.L. Harman, Judge N. Porter Sims, Charles M. Moore, Jewell Betterworth, Charles L. Taylor, Maurice A. Hill, Lewis F. Allen, G.D. Milliken Jr., Herschel Leaton, Roy Phillips and Charles Nahm Jr.

SURVIVING ARE his widow, Mrs. Genevieve Sledge; a daughter, Mrs. Phillip Noel Jr., Louisville; a son, David Hall Sledge, Louisville; a brother, M. Excell Sledge, Bowling Green, and a sister, Mrs. George W. Meuth, Washington, D.C.

He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. M.H. Sledge and was born at Allen Springs July 6, 1883. As a young man he displayed keen interest in public affairs and while in his teens served as an attendant in the Kentucky General Assembly during the time his father was serving as representative in the legislature. He received his education in the public schools and the Bowling Green Business University.

His career as a financier is the story of the consistent growth of the Potter-Matlock Trust Company and the American National Bank from comparatively small concerns to the financial institutions they are today.

MR. SLEDGE became associated with Potter-Matlock and Company, bankers, in January, 1904. He served through the reorganization of that company into the Potter-Matlock Bank and Trust Company, and the separation of the bank and trust departments when the banking division was converted into the American National Bank and the trust department became the Potter-Matlock Trust Company. -He was the first secretary-treasurer of the trust company.

He held every executive position in both organizations and his steady advance being climaxed with his election as president of both organizations in 1923. He served in this capacity until his retirement in 1947.

The only interruption in his continuous service with the American National and Potter-Matlock institutions came in 1914, when he accepted the cashiership of the Warren National Bank, an institution which 12 months later merged with the American National. At that time, Mr. Sledge became the cashier of the enlarged institution.

His genius for organization was again displayed when in December, 1923, he directed the transaction through which the American National assumed the assets of the Liberty National Bank of Bowling Green.

Mr. Sledge was a member of the State Street Methodist church and formerly served as a steward of that congregation. He was also a past president of the Bowling Green Rotary Club.
