He enlisted in the Navy in 1944, and retired from the U.S.N.R. as a Lt. Commander after 25 years. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Lynchburg, VA, and a Freemason for 60 years, and a member of Westmoreland Lodge #212. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Mary Virginia Grigg of Richmond, VA: 3 children, Joseph Emory Jr., (Betsy); Ivy Lynn Stennett, (Reggie); William Edward, (Denie); 5 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Dorotha Hartman. He was predeceased by a daughter, Nancy Grigg, and a sister, Mary Kathryn Rector. The family will plan a private graveside service at Spring Hill Cemetery in Lynchburg, VA where he will be laid to rest. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the .
