Economist. Admitted as Fellow of Gonville and Caius College Cambridge, 1958-75; College Lecturer and Director of Studies in Economics. Registrary, 1963-72. Reader in Economics, University of Cambridge, 1970-75.

He was educated at King Edward V School, Sheffield and read politics, philosophy and economics at New College, Oxford (BA 1949,t MA 1953). He married Margaret Bacon in 1952; they had five sons. In 1957 Farrell contacted polio which paralysed and crippled him.
