George Cathey, 91, of 203 Pritchard Road, Candler, N.C. died Friday, September 8, 1995, at his home.
Born in Buncombe County, N.C., he was a son of the late James Thaddous Cathey and Ida Wright Cathey. He was a graduate of Candler High School and went on to UNC-Chapel Hill where he received his bachelor of arts degree id education and played center on the Tar Hell basketball teams. He taught and coached basketball with the Buncombe County System at West Buncombe, Flat Creek, Sandhill and Enka High Schools until his retirement in 1969. He was a member of Acton United Methodist Church.
He was survived by his wife, Edith Finley Cathey; son, Jim Cathey of Pickens, S.C.; sisters, Nell C. Morgan of Cape Canaveral, Florida and Florence Cathey of Candler, N.C.; brother, Craig Cathey of Asheville, N.C.; grandchildren, Bonnie Cathey, Mark Cathey and Ben Cathey.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Monday, September 11, 1995 at Groce Funeral Home with Rev. Paul K. Hacklander officiating. Burial was in Pisgah View Mausoleum.
