He was born on April 21, 1949 in Brunswick, Maine, the son of the late William N. Field, Jr. and Florence Prince Coombs.
Bobby joined the United States Marine Corps in 1968, serving two and a half years. He was deployed twice to Vietnam. After his discharge in 1970, he was employed by Bath Iron Works, then Coastal Economic Development. He found his true passion when he became a self employed Shellfish Harvester, which he continued until he could no longer work in September 2011.
