The son of William & Sarah (Hafer) Hoffman, in 1860 he was a saddler presumably living in or near Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, although he is not found in that census. He stood 5' 8" tall and had dark hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he was federally drafted at the stated age of twenty-three, mustered into federal service at Chambersburg March 20, 1865, as a private with Co. I, 56th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 1, 1865.

He married Rebecca T. lnu. ca. 1868 and fathered William H. (b. @1869), James G. (b. @1871), Mabel A. (b. @1873), Georgianna (b. @1878), and Ada B. (b. 07/??/78). Cause of his death is listed as "uremia" with a "weak heart" a contributing factor.
