Bob Lyons was born in Brooklyn, Kings, New York. He was the oldest of two sons. His brother was Harry Herbert Lyons who went by the name of Bert.
His parents owned a home in Brooklyn that his father split into two apartments. Members of Bob's mother's family lived in the second apartment.
Bob went to Brooklyn Tech and was planning to be a chemist. But World War II got in the way. Because of a heart murmur, he was given a clerical job in the Army.
He met his future wife, Friederike, in a bicycle Club in NYC. They were married on 4 Jul 1942. They had two children.
Bob worked as a carpenter for the government early in life. He then owned his own deli shop but had to close it when he entered the Army. After the war, he went to work for a grocery chain called Bohack and over the years he worked in several Bohack stores on Long Island, N.Y. He was manager of the store in Sea Cliff when Bohack went bankrupt. Because the union boss respected him, he helped Bob obtain a job in another grocery chain, Gristedes. Bob worked there until he retired and he and his wife moved upstate New York. During his life, he and his wife bought two "fix me uppers" and he totally renovated the homes. He and his wife had a shell put up for their retirement home, and Bob finished that house too. He said that was the last house he was going to build!
They are buried in Van Etten, New York.
